AMERICAN FIGHTER (n): One who overcomes against all odds, one who never gives up, a person of character who does not accept defeat.
Everyone is fighting for something. Some are fighting to overcome an illness; others are fighting to overcome poverty, injury, grief or other bad situations. In the greatest game…the game of life, come the greatest challenges. When everyday people are challenged by life they have a choice: Let life and the situation that is in front of them knock them out…or stand up to the challenge, answer the bell, and fight.
American Fighter chronicles the fight of everyday champions and the quest to win their fight and overcome. There are 3 million people in America, there are millions of stories to tell and life fights to watch unfold. What are you fighting for?
American Fighter does more than tell the stories. Host Rich Franklin, three-time middleweight Champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championships, guides us through each fight and each battle through the eyes and the being of our American Fighter.
Joe Garvey: At age 14, Joe Garvey was already considered a star athlete. He excelled in basketball, football and his favorite, baseball. He and his coaches had aspirations and great expectations for the coming years. Then, the dream ended with a tragedy. A near deadly ATV accident broke Joe’s spine in half leaving him motionless. Called a “sitter” by his surgeons, told that he would never walk again, Joe set out to prove them wrong. After months of intense physical therapy, self-motivation and the support of family and friends Joe stood up and took his first steps. Now, at age 21, Joe walks with the assistance of crutches and small braces on the lower part of his legs. He attends college and holds a part-time job at the DMV. Joe has reached a plateau in his fight. He “answered the bell”, but must continue the fight.
